A valiant effort by our Brit footballers, especially with a man down for most of the game. But everyone knows you can't win with just a great defense and England are notoriously crappy in penalty shoot-out situations. Credit to Portugal goalie Ricardo and some fabulous penalty kick saves.
Major disappointments by the big names, but great efforts by some newcomers and a great game from Canadian born Owen Hargreaves - happy Canada Day !
I guess I'll watch a little more of the tournament, albeit with far less enthusiasm.
Moving on.
I've been writing this blog since 2005. I have had a number of content specific blogs in the past, but decided in 2013 to consolidate them all back into PJMixer. You'll find photo projects, movie reviews, new music and general thoughts about my life. Hey Bro.
It took an entire day of mindless spraying of cabinet doors to numb the pain, but I am proud of the boys, and still wore my jersey that night!
Terry stole the spotlight for me, passion in bounds, and an obvious love for country and game. Lennon was impressive, and a breath of fresh air. But the best part of this dismassal, ciao Sven, the only coach I know that couldn't inspire a cow to make milk!
Not sure who to support now, France has impressed me lately, and Zidane is fun to watch. Germany perhaps. Not impressed with Italy at all, and Portugal.. well... what can I say?
Cheers,
Dick
I'm the first to admit that I'm biased, but have to add my 2 cents.
Terry was better in this match than the last where he was brutal, but not as good as a couple of matches ago where he was brilliant.
Yesterday, I was so impressed with Hargreaves. He seemed to really be hustling and fighting the whole time. A lot of times it's difficult (for me) to know who the player is (yes hubby, perhaps a plasma tv would have helped) but I found that anytime there was someone really fighting for the ball, it was Owen. I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Here's an article regarding the "FIFA Man of the Match" (not England man of the match) as voted by FIFA technical committee: Owen Hargreaves.
FIFA Article
Of course, the article is biased as well as it is Canadian - haven't found this mentioned in Brit online news. As Hargreaves mentioned "it's not about individuals" so really, only the result matters but I'm taking a little encouragement that perhaps I haven't seen the end of my Owens (good news on the Michael front - not as bad as it looked - may be back for beginning of 2007 season)
Watched the game with the folks and the boys during a weekend in the Midlands.
I was off work yesterday, so haven't had the water cooler on the game. But I'm over it.
Bring on the next generation.
Suze says...
just read the bad news regarding my favourite Owen (Michael that is)- out for at least a year when they found another problem after this week's surgery. uggh!
Well, at least he'll be able to enjoy his 5 month old son (and 3 year old daughter). Ah, the information you can gain from going to the hair salon and reading "Hello"
Another good tidbit courtesy of Hello...John Terry had to leave training camp (in Portugal, no less)- Perhaps a Brit can explain why they would go to Portugal to train before the world cup - Were there spies watching them practice their free kicks ;-) - I would like an answer besides the obvious answer of getting away from the British press and the weather (there are other places to get away to who they would not have to play against) I know hindsight is 20-20. Oh yeah - got off on a tangent there, sorry, so John Terry had to fly back to England to welcome his baby twins.
